MATT MURRAY
21-Year-Old Rookie Does Not Lack in Confidence, Competitiveness
By Sam Werner ⢠May 13, 2016
When Matt Murray took the ice for his first NHL practice in December, the rookie goaltender was surrounded by a team full of Stanley Cup champions and two former Hart Trophy winners in Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.
Murray, 21, quickly let all of them know he wasnât intimidated.
âWhen he was first called up first, up here, heâs jamming at guysâ feet, whacking at rebounds,â defenseman Ian Cole said. âIt doesnât matter who it is ⦠heâs whacking at guys, trying to clear them out of the crease.â
But that competitiveness has fueled Murrayâs rapid rise in the NHL, where he has emerged as a star between the pipes for the Penguins. He is likely to start in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference final against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Consol Energy Center.
Whether itâs in practice or in overtime against the Washington Capitals, the best team in the NHL in the regular season, Murray does not believe any pucks should get past him.
âThatâs what makes him so good,â Penguins goalie Jeff Zatkoff said. âIt doesnât matter how it goes in, he doesnât think he should be scored on.â
The mindset isnât new for Murray, either. Former NHL winger Lonny Bohonos coached Murrayâs bantam team for two years in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Murrayâs hometown.
He recalled a 14-year-old Murray working to prevent every goal he could in practices.
âI think he had that rapport with some of the players,â Bohonos said. âIf they scored on him, they were pumped.â
Bohonos was just getting into coaching when he worked with Murray, so he didnât know what a future NHL goalie looked like as a teenager. But he saw the work ethic and confidence that would serve Murray well down the road.
âLooking back now, am I surprised? By no means,â Bohonos said. âNo, Iâm not. He was good.â
